اول از همه برایت آرزومندم که عاشق شوی،
و اگر هستی، کسی هم به تو عشق بورزد،
و اگر اینگونه نیست، تنهائیت کوتاه باشد،

که دستکم یکی از آن‌ها اعتراضش به حق باشد،
تا که زیاده به خودت غره نشوی.
و نیز آرزومندم مفیدِ فایده باشی
نه خیلی غیرضروری،
تا در لحظات سخت
وقتی دیگر چیزی باقی نمانده است
همین مفید بودن کافی باشد تا تو را سرِ پا نگه‌دارد.
همچنین، برایت آرزومندم صبور باشی
نه با کسانی که اشتباهات کوچک می‌کنند
چون این کارِ ساده‌ای است،
بلکه با کسانی که اشتباهات بزرگ و جبران
ناپذیر می‌کنند
و با کاربردِ درست صبوری‌ات برای دیگران
نمونه شوی.و امیدوام اگر جوان هستی
خیلی به تعجیل، رسیده نشوی
و اگر رسیده‌ای، به جوان‌نمائی اصرار نورزی
و اگر پیری، تسلیم ناامیدی نشوی
چرا که هر سنی خوشی و ناخوشی خودش را دارد
و لازم است بگذاریم در ما جریان یابند.
امیدوارم سگی را نوازش کنی
به پرنده‌ای دانه بدهی، و به آواز یک سَهره
گوش کنی
وقتی که آوای سحرگاهیش را سر می‌ دهد.
چرا که به این طریق
احساس زیبائی خواهی یافت، به رایگان.
امیدوارم که دانه‌ای هم بر خاک بفشانی
هرچند خُرد بوده باشد
و با روئیدنش همراه شوی
تا دریابی چقدر زندگی در یک درخت وجود دارد.
بعلاوه، آرزومندم پول داشته باشی
زیرا در عمل به آن نیازمندی
و برای اینکه سالی یک بار
پولت را جلو رویت بگذاری و بگوئی:

فقط برای اینکه روشن کنی کدامتان اربابِ دیگری است!
و در پایان، اگر مرد باشی،
آرزومندم زن خوبی داشته باشی
و اگر زنی، شوهر خوبی داشته باشی
که اگر فردا خسته باشید، یا پس‌فردا
شادمان باز هم از عشق حرف برانید تا از نو بیاغازید.
